Donald Trump’s claim that he has absolute immunity for criminal acts taken in office as president is an insult to reason, an assault on common sense and a perversion of the fundamental maxim of American democracy: that no man is above the law. More astonishing than the former president’s claim to immunity, however, is the fact that the Supreme Court took the case in the first place. It is a process so vital, and so precious, that its first occurrence — with the defeat of John Adams and the Federalists at the hands of Thomas Jefferson’s Republicans in the 1800 presidential election — marks a second sort of American Revolution. And if the trial occurs after an election in which Trump wins a second term and he is convicted, then the court will have teed the nation up for an acute constitutional crisis. A president, for the first time in the nation’s history, might try to pardon himself for his own criminal behavior.

CNN —Fifty-six years after a Florida milkman failed to return home after his rounds, his homicide has been solved, closing the oldest cold case in Indian River County Sheriff’s Office history. The next day, Grayam’s body and truck were located in a wooded area in what was described as a “chilling scene,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. Over the subsequent years, 16 separate investigations occurred through April 1974 in an effort to solve the case, Flowers said. After receiving that information, detectives tracked down the suspect’s ex-wife, who also said Williams confessed to her, Flowers said. The witnesses said the suspect had been arrested and convicted several times on other charges, the sheriff’s office added.

In a rare occurrence, a trillion cicadas from two different broods are expected to begin appearing in the Midwest and Southeast regions of the United States at the end of April. I spent the bulk of my Friday column summarizing early Republic and antebellum debates on the nature of the American Republic. The arguments run from Thomas Jefferson and James Madison in the 1790s to Abraham Lincoln in the 1860s. Speaking of Lincoln, researching that column gave me an excuse to read through a few of his most famous speeches and addresses. Since mid-November the rebels have been attacking commercial ships in the Red Sea and the Strait of Bab al-Mandab. The Red Sea is a vital waterway that connects to the Suez Canal, through which 10% to 15% of world trade passes. In its fight, the Houthi group has distracted from Yemen’s humanitarian crisis, shored up domestic and international support, and made its name known among those who knew little to nothing about the movement, they say. That narrative has taken hold among those who oppose the Gaza war the world over. Yemen’s civil war began in 2014, when Houthi forces stormed the capital Sanaa and toppled the internationally recognized, Saudi-backed government.

The Danish drama “The Promised Land” takes its old-fashioned remit with enjoyable seriousness. There, on a vast shrubby expanse thought untamable yet beloved by the Danish monarch, Kahlen hopes to work the land and establish a settlement for king, country and himself. Written by Arcel and Anders Thomas Jensen, the well-paced story briskly takes Kahlen from the poorhouse to the royal palace minutes after opening, establishing the reach of his ambition. (The movie is based on the novel “The Captain and Ann Barbara” from the Danish writer Ida Jessen.) In return, Kahlen wants a title, a manor and servants; effectively, he wants to become one of them.

Though Musk can appeal the decision, there are signs that this battle is about more than just the massive pay package that has propelled him to a $205 billion fortune.
